The tiny town of Ridgeland, S.C. uses an automated camera to take pictures of your car after it has been clocked on I-95 by an automated radar gun. The town then mails offenders a speeding citation. They tell you that if you pay the fine they won’t notify your state DMV and points won’t be assessed against your driving record, but if you refuse to pay, they will notify your DMV. This behavior by Ridgeland is anything but above board or legal, all in the name of collecting money for Ridgeland.
Furthermore, it turns out that the mayor of Ridgeland, the instigator of this traffic fine scam, has been informed by state authorities that he is in violation of South Carolina State law yet he continues to ignore the law and collect thousands of dollars in speeding fines. Over 3,000 speeding tickets were issued by Ridgeland in the month of October 2010 for the 7-mile stretch of I-95 in Ridgeland’s Jasper County.
I’m not condoning speeding or reckless driving but I condemn enforcement of one law that requires another law to be broken in the process. It seems appropriate that Jasper County and especially Ridgeland should be subjected to a boycott of town and county businesses until their mayor decides to obey his own state laws and cease his illegal speeding ticket scam.
Irresponsible power is inconsistent with liberty, and must corrupt those who exercise it.

The people profiting from this scam are finally being exposed!
You apparently missed the point of this article, which is the implementation of an action, an illegal action, to enforce a law is in and of itself illegal and unethical. If the Mayor of Ridgeland is concerned about speeding, he should send his police officers to I-95 and write tickets to their hearts content. You are correct about the rampant speeding on I-95 and yes something needs to be done, but don't do it by breaking the law.
Beat a speeding ticket, DON'T speed.
