On October 14, 2009 a Florida boy was attacked by 5 boys, who poured rubbing alcohol on him and set his entire body afire. Their motive was retaliation for an alleged case of the boy snitching on them. The 5 attacking boys consisted of 2 whites and 3 blacks and the victim was white. Question: If the victim had been black and his attackers had been 3 whites and 2 blacks, would this case be treated as a hate crime? I say yes, and furthermore I can just hear the community outcry and the arrival of Al Sharpton and Jessee Jackson to lead the people in protest with demands for justice against the physical persecution of a black citizen. I can well imagine President Obama denouncing the perpetrators as racist and yet another example of violence against blacks in America...
Will the white community organize a protest and demand that authorities treat this as a hate crime? Probably not, but should they? I say they shouldn’t and as a white person I am probably representative of most white Americans who see this as a senseless crime, a crime so brutal and callous that it defies understanding.Unfortunately, our country remains fractured with two opposing sides crying out that the other side is discriminating against them and performing violent acts against them. More of this seems to emanate from Black Americans who seize upon every opportunity to point the finger of discrimination against White America. Politicians, even to the office of the President of the United States, join this cry and demand accountability and stiffer laws to punish those who perform hate crimes and racial profiling. So who is promoting racist separatism within our country? Yes, there are racist whites but blacks are almost unanimous in their belief that all whites are racist and that few blacks harbor racist attitudes against whites. What is the answer to all of this name-calling and more importantly, what is the answer to such senseless and violent crimes and how can our country become a more understanding and gentle place to live?

Actually my comment is paraphrased from Obama's book, "Dreams from my Father". He makes numerous references to whites and blacks and you might want to read my soon to be published article where I will identify numerous quotes from his book, some of which are extremely profane and offensive.
All of this is just ultra-defensiveness from a white man who refuses to be introspective or thoughtful of his analysis of this country. I'm a proud American and a white woman, but let's face facts - racism still lives on strong and you're full of it.
It is a sad affair we have now in this country.
