Well, the excitement about how the Giles County School Board stood up to the big bad wolf of atheism has taken a nose dive into the tank. Oh yes, it has been made to appear that they have a plan to return the Ten Commandments in some sort of revised display but that doesn't change the fact that they were shaking in their boots and rushed to undo the good they had done.
Just when Smyth County and other Southwest Virginia localities were gearing-up to support the movement created by the Giles County School Board decision, whammy, the courageous movement goes up in smoke without a fire.
Once again the minority has won against the majority. Don't even bother telling me about the Constitution and how the good people of Giles County don't have the intellect to properly interpret the document. Don't tell me about how Giles County was breaking the law by displaying the Ten Commandments in the county schools. All of that dialogue is about people, good people, being told to obey "man's law" and disregard "God's Law". If you don't agree with that statement then how about "forcing people to place man's law above God's Law?"
The whole issue is mindful of how one woman changed the face of our country when she rebelled against prayer in public schools. People didn't pay much attention to her because they thought, "what chance does she have of changing anything, she's just one unknown woman?" Well, one unknown woman by the name of Madeline Murray O'Hare (some people spell it O'Hair) slipped through the crack and got her way when the Supreme Court agreed that it was unconstitutional to allow prayer in public schools.
When we don't take these issues seriously and stand-up for our beliefs, we have turned our back on all that is important to us and society as a whole. Yes, it takes courage, commitment, and just plain old backbone to stand alone and face insurmountable odds in order to protect what you believe in, while others mock you and threaten you. Where have all of our heroes gone?
If the freedom of speech is taken away then dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep to the slaughter.

Your comment and idea are both worthy for consideration by those with authority to take such action.
However, why does the issue about the Ten Commandments evoke such anti-Old Testament and anti-Christian passions within you and others who share your passion?
Have you searched the Koran to find similar issues you disagree with and make public comments about them?
Your comment isn't offensive to me but it hints that you place our government above God Almighty and this is the issue that evokes my personal passion. Thanks for your comment.
The Golden Rule should be the most important lesson taught to children. Put it in a plaque and put it on the school wall. Don't add a scripture reference, as that would violate the separation of church & state. But put it on the walls and teach it to the children, and also as a reminder to adults who read it.
You make some excellent points. I'm most definitely a fiscal conservative and have for many years been trying to get the school system in Giles County to perform a total review of their operations in an effort to minimize unnecessary costs so the savings can be applied to improvement in the educational process. The school board, primarily J.B. Buckland, has indicated there isn't a need for such a review. Yes, that is another topic for another time.
Maybe you know and maybe you don't but more than one offer was extended to Giles County by organizations interested in paying for the legal fees that would be incurred by the school system and the county. I don't know if those offers were accepted or rejected but apparently they were rejected based on the school board's decision to run from the legal confrontation.
In regard to school employees and their jobs I would like to ask why these employees continue to conceal what they know to be wasteful spending by the school central office when they instruct teachers to purchase more materials before the budget for that fiscal year expires (indicating the budgeted money will be lost if not spent). I have been told this in confidence by teachers who are afraid to confront the school board with this information for fear of being fired.
Yes, we are entitled to our opinion and thank God we live in a country where we can express our opinion but not always without fear of repercussion (e.g. teachers vs school board).
