I spent my youth in Pearisburg, Virginia where I attended public school until I graduated from Giles High School in 1962. I married Marjorie Whitlow, who lived in Rich Creek, Virginia and graduated from Narrows High School in 1962. We spent 38 years in the Hampton Roads Virginia area where we raised our daughter, Tamara Michelle. Marjorie worked at NASA and I was employed at Newport News Shipbuilding until our retirement, upon which we left our professional careers, all of the traffic congestion, and returned to “God’s Country” here in Giles County. We’ve never looked back and are thankful we were able to return to Giles County where Marjorie’s mother and two of her sisters reside. Both of my parents are deceased. Retirement is great but I found that I couldn’t play enough golf to satisfy my desire to be accomplished in some fashion, which obviously wasn’t golf. Volunteer work has been a favorite way for me to spend my time, but once again I felt the need to do more and it took me a couple of years of living in Giles County to realize I had an intense desire to try to make a positive difference in the lives of Giles County citizens. The one way I felt I could make such a difference was to become informed about county issues, both important and routine issues, so I could inform citizens who don’t have the time to attend Board of Supervisor meetings and other important county administration meetings.
I've shared my weekly column, Giles County Observer, with objective citizens for 2 years and I hope visitors and readers who reside in Giles County will gain a measure of enjoyment and information from my column. I also hope that persons residing outside of Giles County will frequently visit NRV News and possibly make a stop to read my column. By no means am I presenting myself as an expert on anything. However, I make every effort to do my homework such that I can present factual information, as well as a measure of my opinions when appropriate. Bookmark this site and visit often.
